Movie Review: The Wreck of the Mary Deare

I would say that this film is a bit unknown. At least I'd never heard of it for a while.
It stars Charlton Heston as John Sands and Gary Cooper as Gideon Patch.
It is based on a book written in 1956 by Hammond Innes.
-
It is about a man named John Sands who stumbles upon a drifting ship(the Mary Deare), and there is only one man aboard, Captain Gideon Patch. The ship had been blown with dynamite and set on fire. Sands ends up stranded on the ship as well, and they are heading straight for the coral reefs. They get the Mary Deare started and Patch drives it aground on the Minkies reef. They get on the only lifeboat left and a plane finds them. Although he doesn't understand yet what happened on the Mary Deare, Sands allows Patch to persuade him not to talk about what he saw on board and to drag out the official investigation of the incident until the day of the court of inquiry.
-
Ok, so that's a pretty vague synopsis, but I didn't want to give anything away.
It is an adventure, crime, drama.
-
I enjoyed this movie very much. It was clear/good quality (unlike some older movies), and the colors and music set the mood nicely. Color was by Metrocolor. I wouldn't have thought to pair Charlton Heston and Gary Copper in a movie together, but they did a wonderful job. Other actors in it were, Richard Harris, Michael Redgrave, and Ben Wright.
-
Pros:
  1. I love the two main actors, and they did a great job
  2. I've never seen Richard Harris in anything else, but he did good as well
  3. When it would pan-out to show the ship sailing, it looked realistic. I'm not sure that it wasn't.
  4. As I said before, good quality
  5. Good music score
Cons:
  1. Charlton Heston said one minor bad word (you might not call it a bad word, but I don't know what else to call it) (*minor spoiler alert*) It is after Gary Cooper digs up the hand in the coal room and Charleton H. sees that he isn't stearing the ship. C.H. then goes down to see where he is, and he says,"Where in ____ have you been? I've been looking all over the ship for you."
  2. Part of a scene close to the end of the movie is a little violent.
-
Over all it was a great movie indeed! If I was to compare it to another movie I've seen, it would be "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."
I recommend it for teens and up. Because of the violent part near the end, *spoiler alert* the hand of the dead sea captain in the coals *spoiler over*, and I just think that kids younger than that wouldn't enjoy it.

Hope you enjoyed my second movie review. Let me know what you thought of it :)

Hope you have a blessed day :)

Movie Review: Scaramouche 1952

Warning: This post may include spoilers, BUT I will warn you first by putting *spoiler* before it, and *done* when you can start reading again.

With that said, here is my take on the movie Scaramouche 1952:
Classic Film and TV Café: Eleanor Parker, Janet Leigh, and a Very Long Swordfight--Good Times for Stewart Granger in "Scaramouche"
Now for a little bit of information about it:
1. Synopses: I'm going to give you two:

After Andre Moreau finds he is the secret bastard son of a recently deceased noble, he realizes that it is his own sister that he's romantically drawn to.
-
Very SMALL *Spoiler*
In 18-century France, a young man masquerades as an actor to avenge his friend's murder.
*done*

2. What era does the movie take place: Late 1700's, the days of Marie Antoinette
3. Color or B&W: Color by Technicolor
4. Main Actor(s): There are really four main actors/actresses, but if I had to pick just one then it would be Stewart Granger
5. Secondary Actor(s): Eleanor Parker, Janet Leigh, and Mel Ferrer.
6. Other important/famous actor(s):  Nina Foch and Henry Wilcoxon
7. Sequel(s)/Remake(s): Apparently there is a 1923 version, but I've never seen it
8. Costume Designer: Gile Steele (Fun Fact: Almost all the movies he designed for, he only did the men's costumes. Also he primarily did period pieces.)
9. Something that was different/stood out/done well: The sword fights, I thought, were down exceptionally well!
10. My favorite character: Andre Moreau

-

I am going to rate this movie from 1 to 100 (100 being Great and 1 being Terrible)
I'm going to give it a 73. The reason it only got a 73 will be stated later on in this review.
-
First of all I just want to say that I LOVED this movie!!!
It had beautiful costumes first of all.

The Dizzying Delights of Scaramouche (1952)

However.... There were some that need to be covered or something. Rating how bad (inappropriate) the costumes were on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 terrible and 10 great), I think they were about a 7. The worst was one part Lenore (Eleanor Parker) was changing and it showed her from the shoulders up (that lasts a few seconds and I just skipped it). Then in a few scenes (she was an actress in the film, and did plays) she wore a sleeveless, "showgirl type" leotard with tights. Several of the women's clothes were tight fitted in the bodice, and/or low. Sometimes the men wore tights, but that was no big deal.
-
If I had to compare this movie to another movie I've seen, it would be The Adventures of Robin Hood and War and Peace 1956
In fact, I recently watched a Romeo and Juliet ballet, and I saw several similarities.
-
Pros:

  1. As I said earlier, I think the sword fighting was done really well.
  2. I love the four main actors/actresses, and they didn't disappoint me in this film! (actually, this was the first film I've seen Stewart Granger in, but it definitely won't be the last)
  3. Beautiful color
  4. Never a dull moment
  5. It was partly, almost like a mystery (and I LOVE mysteries)
Cons:
  1. Eleanor Parker didn't act nice in most scenes.
  2. In one part Stewart Granger pretends to read Janet Leigh's palm.
  3. It is partly a romance (action, adventure, and comedy come first), so it does have parts of that sort.
I can't think of any other "Cons" ;)
-
I'm not a film expert but here are my thoughts:
I thought it was written very well. It was long enough to where you got to know the characters, but not too long, so that it had boring scenes that dragged on.
Over all I would say it was fantastic movie, and I would (and will) watch it again and again. :)
So to conlude...
If you like swashbuckling, pirate(no, this is not about pirates), sword-fighting, classic, or comedy/adventure/action movies then you will probably like this one.
-
It can be found on Amazon to rent for $2.99 or buy for $9.99
It can also be found on a website called: Viooz.ac. BUT, beware of this site. For it has multiple (usually bad) ads. That includes pictures on the left side and at the bottom, and pop-ups, every time you click the screen. If you are using Google Chrome on a desktop or laptop computer, like I am, you can go to your apps and get the "Adblock Plus" and that should take them off. If it doesn't you can use it to manually take them off.

Hoped you enjoyed the review. I hope to write more in the future. Perhaps I'll get better. Please tell me what you liked about the review, what you didn't, and what you would like to see/hear in the future. (yes, I want you to write a review of my review)

Get to Know Me...

Kellie Falconer is/was hosting a blog party, as she does every year, over at her amazing blog: KellieFalconer.Blogspot.com

I was too late to join, but I thought I'd answer the questions anyhow, to get my blog off to a good start :)

~
  1. Introduce yourself! Divulge your life's vision, likes, dislikes, aspirations, or something completely random! Hello! My Name is Susannah (Sue). I am a born again Christian and my life goal is to do God's will for me. I enjoy drawing/painting, playing the piano, writing, baking, Disney, the outdoors, rain, animals, reading God's word (The Holy Bible),  and spending time with my family. I home school, along with my Brother, and my Sister graduated a few years ago. I don't like to be cold, because I get cold so easily and so often. I don't like coffee, and I prefer dark chocolate over milk and white.
  2. What, to you, forms the essence of a true heroine? Someone who knows the right thing to do and gets it done. Who has faults, but their good qualities over shine them. Who, when in a jam, is not afraid or too proud to ask for help.
  3. Share (up to) four heroines of literature that you most admire and relate to. Emma Woodhouse/Knightly, Lizzy Bennett/Darcy , and Marianne Dashwood/Brandon (yep, they're all Jane Austen)
  4. Five of your favorite historical novels? (Well, since this blog is more of a movie blog, (and I haven't read very many historical novels) I am going to change this to "Historical Films") I'm not sure if these are my top picks, but here are some that come to mind: The Sound of Music, Gone With the Wind, The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Ten Commandments, and Emma 2009
  5. Out of those five "books"(films) who is your favorite major character and why? Emma. Because, we both love art, music, walking, dancing, etc. She has her faults, but her good qualities over shine them like a true heroine.
  6. Out of those five "books"(films) who is your favorite secondary character and why? Mr. Knightly (Yes, Emma again. It might be my favorite movie!) Because he's charming, kind, caring, etc.
  7. If you were to plan out your dream vacation, where would you travel to - and what would you plan to do there? Australia or Disneyland, and I have boards for them :) https://www.pinterest.com/sueandsarah/destination-australia/ --- https://www.pinterest.com/sueandsarah/disney-worldsomeday/ --- (I also want to go to Ireland)
  8. What is your favorite time period and culture to "read about"(watch)? 50's, 20's, and 60's America, and late 1700's England. I also enjoy a good "Bible days" movie.
  9. You have been invited to perform at the local charity concert. Singing, comedy, recitation, tap dancing… what is your act comprised of?  Probably playing the piano. But that doesn't sound like something I'd do.
  10. If you were to attend a party where each guest was to portray a heroine of literature, who would you select to represent? Perhaps Marianne
  11. Favorite author(s)? Hmmm... Can't possibly choose!
  12. In which century "were most of the books you read written" (were most of the movies you've watch made in)? 40's and 50's. Not sure out of those.
  13. In your opinion, the ultimate hero in all literature is… Mr. Knightly
  14. In your opinion, the most dastardly villain of all "literature"(movies) is... Maybe, Mr. Potter or Eve (from All About Eve)
  15. Describe your ideal dwelling place. Well, I have several: 1. A beautiful tree house in the middle of a tropical rain forest. 2. A pretty stone, country cottage, with vines and a white picket fence. 3. A stately mansion ;)
  16. Sum up your fashion style in a short sentence. Casual, girly, charming, retro, and classic. (the last three are what I'm trying to make it ;))
  17. Three favorite Non-fiction books? The Holy Bible, and two awesome books I am currently reading are, "Will This Generation Speak" and "Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends."
  18. Your duties met for the day, how would you choose to spend a carefree summer afternoon? Watching a movie with my family, inviting some friends over, or a nice run on the trails through the woods. Or, if a good one is showing, go to the movies ;)
  19. Create a verbal sketch of your dream hat - in such a way as will best portray your true character. Well I've always wanted a silk top hat; one that will pop up and down. I also love flowers, so a hat like this, from Easter Parade, would be perfect ;) (I'd absolutely love it, but I doubt I'd actually wear it ;P)
  20. Share the most significant event(s) that have marked your life in the past year. Are we talking about 2014? O.K. then. Well, I turned 16(!!!! Big year).
  21. Share the Bible passage(s) that have been most inspiring to you recently. Well, (yes, I say "well" a lot in writing) Ephesians 6:16 KJV has been showing up in places a lot lately. Also, before that I had been memorizing Ephesians 6:10-20 KJV and quoting it everyday. Which brings to mind: Hebrews 11:1 KJV
I had a lot of fun doing this, and hope to post often in the future :)
To conclude this post, I just want to say, Welcome to my blog,
Enjoy!
