I would say that this film is a bit unknown. At least I'd never heard of it for a while.
It stars Charlton Heston as John Sands and Gary Cooper as Gideon Patch.
It is based on a book written in 1956 by Hammond Innes.
-
It is about a man named John Sands who stumbles upon a drifting ship(the Mary Deare), and there is only one man aboard, Captain Gideon Patch. The ship had been blown with dynamite and set on fire. Sands ends up stranded on the ship as well, and they are heading straight for the coral reefs. They get the Mary Deare started and Patch drives it aground on the Minkies reef. They get on the only lifeboat left and a plane finds them. Although he doesn't understand yet what happened on the Mary Deare, Sands allows Patch to persuade him not to talk about what he saw on board and to drag out the official investigation of the incident until the day of the court of inquiry.

Ok, so that's a pretty vague synopsis, but I didn't want to give anything away.
It is an adventure, crime, drama.

I enjoyed this movie very much. It was clear/good quality (unlike some older movies), and the colors and music set the mood nicely. Color was by Metrocolor. I wouldn't have thought to pair Charlton Heston and Gary Copper in a movie together, but they did a wonderful job. Other actors in it were, Richard Harris, Michael Redgrave, and Ben Wright.
-
Pros:
- I love the two main actors, and they did a great job
- I've never seen Richard Harris in anything else, but he did good as well
- When it would pan-out to show the ship sailing, it looked realistic. I'm not sure that it wasn't.
- As I said before, good quality
- Good music score
Cons:
- Charlton Heston said one minor bad word (you might not call it a bad word, but I don't know what else to call it) (*minor spoiler alert*) It is after Gary Cooper digs up the hand in the coal room and Charleton H. sees that he isn't stearing the ship. C.H. then goes down to see where he is, and he says,"Where in ____ have you been? I've been looking all over the ship for you."
- Part of a scene close to the end of the movie is a little violent.
-
Over all it was a great movie indeed! If I was to compare it to another movie I've seen, it would be "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."
I recommend it for teens and up. Because of the violent part near the end, *spoiler alert* the hand of the dead sea captain in the coals *spoiler over*, and I just think that kids younger than that wouldn't enjoy it.

Hope you enjoyed my second movie review. Let me know what you thought of it :)
